Lately, I’ve been reflecting on Simon Sinek’s famous TED Talk about starting with why—how the most impactful businesses don’t just focus on what they do, but why they do it. It’s challenged me to articulate what truly sets my work apart in the beauty industry.
What: I’m a makeup artist—just a makeup artist. I don’t dabble in hair, skincare, or nails. My expertise is focused, refined, and intentional.
How: Unlike traditional beauty spaces, I don’t have other employees or multiple clients in the room at once. Every session is private, uninterrupted, and tailored entirely to the individual in my chair.
Why: Because what you don’t see is just as important—if not more—than what you do see. Makeup isn’t just about application; it’s about perception, presence, and how someone feels in their own skin. It’s about transformation in ways people often don’t even realize they need—until they experience it. A shift in perspective, a reclaiming of confidence, a moment where they see themselves differently.
That’s the real magic. The kind that lingers long after the makeup comes off.
Thinking through this framework has been eye-opening, and I’d love to hear—have you ever considered your own why in what you do and what you enroll in?
