As an observer and educator, I’m frequently asked about the optimal moment to introduce makeup as a beauty routine (excluding dance or theater) to young girls.

I’ve discovered that middle school is a wonderful opportunity for a young girl’s first private makeup lesson. The transition from elementary school to middle school creates a near-universal increase in anxiety, stress, and discomfort. Exploring presentation through makeup in middle school can encourage students to be more confident, learn self-reliance, and feel more independent, especially as they venture beyond the orbit of their parents.

Ages 12-13 are such pivotal chapters in a young woman’s life where she begins to explore her identity and express herself in new ways. Much like exploring job pathways in these malleable years, students can better align their education and identity with their careers.

I often find myself wishing that private makeup lessons were available when I was in middle school. Having someone who wasn’t directly involved in shaping my social identity look me in the eyes, truly see me, and help me navigate understanding and expressing myself would have been invaluable.
