As a makeup artist, I often encounter moments that, while seemingly superficial, reveal deep-rooted emotions and experiences. Recently, a woman approached me to compliment my metallic pink heels. She shared that she used to wear heels all the time but, after suffering a stroke, can no longer wear them. This was such a vulnerable and poignant moment, a stark contrast to an earlier conversation with a friend who said she “couldn’t put herself through the discomfort” of wearing heels.
These contrasting conversations, though centered around something as simple as shoes, highlight how what might seem superficial can hold significant meaning. During makeup appointments, I frequently witness similar instances of “superficial” grief and disclosure. Clients often express sadness over no longer being able to use a favorite color, product, or item that once brought them joy. Whether due to aging, life changes, budget constraints, or skin irritations, these losses can feel deeply personal.
It’s important to recognize that superficial grief and disclosure are still human and valid. The physical manifestations that once made our hearts dance and the items we once loved can hold a special place in our lives. Acknowledging and sharing these feelings is a natural part of our human experience. So, whether it’s a pair of heels, a beloved makeup look, a pre-pregnancy body, or a pair of breasts, these conversations remind us of the profound connections we have to the seemingly superficial aspects of our lives. And that’s perfectly okay. Letting go is a lifelong journey.
