We often use these terms interchangeably, but they each play a different role in how we see ourselves.

Self-Concept: The big picture—how you define yourself. It’s what you believe to be true about who you are.
Example: “I am creative.”
Self-Esteem: How you feel about yourself. It’s your sense of worth and value.
Example: “I like being creative, and I feel proud of my work.”
Self-Confidence: Belief in your abilities. It’s situation-based and grows with experience.
Example: “I trust that I can create something beautiful.”
Self-Compassion: The missing piece. It’s giving yourself grace when things don’t go perfectly.
Example: “Even if I mess up, I’m still an artist, and I can try again.”

If you’re struggling, ask yourself: Do I need to change how I see myself, how I feel about myself, or what I believe I can do? When all these pieces align, you feel most like you.
