She Looked Like Art

unnamedIf you didn’t know already, I majored in Fashion (emphasis in Styling) with a Marketing minor. I’ve fallen in love with the concept of Runway Shows and consistently have the opportunity to do makeup for several of them. Sure, fashion can promote unrealistic expectations of waistlines and leg lengths, but it also promotes the ability to daydream and be inspired by specific details. The latter of the two motivators is what I am constantly drawn to. Having a fashion background has allowed me to view the beauty side of Runway Shows in a specific way. I always find myself wanting to recreate the hair and makeup l see, because they feel like walking pieces of art.

Recently, I found an photo I saved on my old computer of a runway show look I obsessed over: Alexis Mabille S/S ’10 in Paris! It was more neutral makeup with fresh skin, geometric color blocking in garb, and 50/50 hair (one side left natural/original, and the other side a bright color). Just like its intention, the look instantly made me feel something. I’ve been going through some pretty monumental changes recently, and I felt that this look and attitude had a lot for relate to.

“She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” -Rainbow Rowell

What I felt

Fresh Makeup: Says “I’m exposing myself.”  I usually put a heavy emphasis on my makeup (since its my profession), and let hair take the back seat.

50/50 hair: Says “This is who I was (natural hair/the past) / “This is who I am (orange hair/the now).”

I think it’s therapeutic to outwardly express inward declarations with hair, makeup and clothes. It will help you see the world in a different way.
