After more than ten years in the beauty industry, I’ve developed a deep comprehension of the intricacies that influence contemporary wedding schedules. In 2020, both the world and I underwent significant transformations. The silver lining: I discovered the beauty and simplicity in providing only in-studio offerings. Prior to the pandemic, I offered on-site services, oftentimes doing the makeup for the weddings I was a bridesmaid in.
Being hired as the makeup artist and a bridesmaid in friends’ weddings involved a delicate dance of time management, skill versatility, financial planning, managing expectations, and self-care.
Time Management: One of the biggest compromises was time. As a makeup artist, I was typically responsible for ensuring the bridal party looked flawless, which often involved early mornings and long hours of work. As a bridesmaid, I was also expected to participate in wedding day primping and photo festivities.
Skill Versatility: Cosmetic skills as a makeup artist undoubtedly came in handy as a bridesmaid. I wasn’t only doing my own makeup but also helping other bridesmaids and bride with theirs. This dual role allowed me to showcase my talents in various settings, from the initial applications to on-the-go touch-ups during the wedding day chaos.
Managing Expectations: As both a makeup artist and a bridesmaid, I was expected to maintain a delicate balance between professionalism and friendship. While I wanted to provide top-notch makeup services, I also wanted to fully immerse myself in the wedding experience and support the bride emotionally. Navigating this balance required clear communication with the bride and other bridesmaids about my dual roles and setting realistic expectations.
Self-Care: With the demands of both roles, it was crucial not to neglect self-care. Weddings were emotionally and physically draining, especially when I was playing multiple roles. I made sure to carve out time for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation to avoid burnout and ensure that I could give my best to as a service provider and bridal party attendant on the big day.
