The Subtle Horror of “The Beauty Ick”

LISTEN TO BLOG POST

We talk about “the ick” like it only happens in dating — that sudden drop in attraction when someone says or does something cringey. But we rarely admit: it happens with ourselves, too.

One day we feel beautiful. The next, we catch our reflection under different lighting, and something shifts — our makeup looks off, our features unfamiliar. We flinch. That’s an ick, too.

But maybe it’s not disgust. It could be viewed as clarity.

What if these moments of cringe are growth in disguise? A sign that our old ways of presenting ourselves — in love, in beauty, in self-image — no longer fit?

Instead of recoiling, we could ask: What part of me is evolving?

Beauty is about being able to see ourselves clearly — and staying kind anyway.
